Fall Forward

There was a commencement given by Denzel Washington that I believe illustrates an important life principle. He eyed a group of recent college graduates and gave them some pearls of wisdom that I would like to share with you today.

Failure is only a step to greatness

He began by quoting Nelson Mandela who once said “There is no passion to be found playing small, in settling for a life that’s less than the one you’re capable of living.” Then, he went on to say these memorable lines:

“I’m sure in your experiences in school, in applying to college, in picking your major, in deciding what you want to do with life, people have told you to make sure you have something to “fall back on.” But I’ve never understood that concept, having something to fall back on. If I’m going to fall, I don’t want to fall back on anything except my faith. I want to fall forward.
At least I figure that way I’ll see what I’m about to hit.

Fall forward. This is what I mean; Reggie Jackson struck out twenty-six-hundred times in his career, the most in the history of baseball. But you don’t hear about the strikeouts. People remember the home runs. Fall forward. Thomas Edison conducted 1,000 failed experiments. Did you know that?
I didn’t know that because the 1,001st was the light bulb. Fall forward. Every failed experiment is one step closer to success.”

I can’t but help agree with Denzel Washington. I was told by someone last night that I couldn’t win this election. As a child of immigrants from the poorest country in the western world, I have always had to overcome immeasurable odds. I have always been told what I couldn’t do. And you know what? I have proven everyone wrong time and time again. When I came to Scranton I was told I couldn’t take on the status quo? I am currently suing the city(here). I was told no one would listen to me? I have a campaign staff and volunteers. I was told no one would care about Scranton. Bloomberg and Wellsfargo covered Scranton because of my activities(here, here). I do not know how to lose. And if I do fall, I am going to fall forward and I challenge all of you to do the same. #Savescranton
